Here’s an artifact when it was cool to smoke. Remember? Me neither, but evidently in the 50’s and 60’s, all the cool people smoked (See Mad Men). Anyway, here’s a gold plated (gold filled, technically, more gold put down than plate) watch lighter from one of Switzerland’s top shelf jewelers and watch retailers, Bucherer. Most of the watch lighters that come out of this period are aluminum, Made in Japan, silver-tone kind of things. I can’t imagine the Swiss buying something made in Japan and slapping their brand on it, so although it looks similar to the Japan ones of this period, it is probably a bit better. The watch itself has a fancy “tiger’s eye” dial and is undoubtedly a mechanical movement. The lighter has better machine finishing that most lighters of this period, and is also gold over a base metal, rather than aluminum. I’m sure some people colelct these, but I like them better as romantic relics from a time when life-shortening activities like daily whiskey drinking and chain smoking were cool.
