Do you what a fire clock is? Antiquorum is having another of their legendary auctions on Nov. 13 in Geneva and are offering two fire (or incense) clocks. These are an early type of clock, usually from China or Japan, that were used to mark time. Incense of a known burn rate was put into the long part of the vessel and allowed to burn. Along the incense were threads which were attached to small balls or bells at regular intervals. When the incense burned through the thread, the balls would fall onto a metal plate or platter, as an time chime. Anyway, I’ve always liked these artifacts, and usually see them in that dragon shape. Antiquorum is auctioning a very unusual steamboat shape, which is really cool looking. As the auction text states:
It is modeled on the Yangtze river steamers brought to China by Europeans that plied the river for over 150 years from about 1835.If I had an extra $10,000 I might bid on it, as I’ve never seen that river boat shape before. Ah, the curse of having to work for a wage.
